Image Optimization

In our efforts to optimize the images and speed the load times, I need to get feedback from various readers on the quality of the images below.

I have taken one banner and saved it in jpg format using various compression precentages. I'm trying to keep the image size under 75kb, and the smaller the better.

So let me know your browser, resolution, and which image still looks the good with the most amount of compression. Click the image thumbnail to view a full screen sample.

Thanks! Image A, 10%, 251kb

Image B, 20%, 70kb

Image C, 25%, 62kb

Image D, 50%, 42kb

Post contains 107 words, total size 1 kb.

1 Mozilla 1.6, 1280x1024, Image D From what I can tell on my laptop with a LCD screen and 57.354 billion colors, there is no appreciable image degradation on any of the compression ratios. As you can see, the orginal non-compressed image is huge! By just varying the compression ratio of the saved image, we can speed load times to where we can still use a nice banner graphic.

2 I just viewed the images on my crappy old desktop monitor, 800x600 resolution and image D still looks fine with no degradation. I'll wait for some more feedback from different users before I compress the other images. But, this will significantly decrease page load times when completed.

3 Win 95, IE 5.0, 800x600 - D looks as good as A. Good job, Bartender. Pour yourself one on me :-)

4 I checked with our artist and she doesn't mind if we compress her images as long as the quality isn't degraded. Why don't I just pour one on you

5 Bitch. If you're gonna waste good booze, pour it on some chicks t-shirt so we can at least get some wicked perky pics around here.

6 Now to see if that "e-mail comments" thing works...

7 Um, I think you got your images and captions mixed up. Image B is actually 42 KB. Image D is 70 KB. The main place I see JPG artifacts is on the blackboard. Everywhere else it is relatively disguised by the general texture in the image. So it's a matter of how much degradation you're willing to live with in that area.

8 IE 6.028, 1280x1024 D looks about as good as A, though it's hard to tell without them side-by-side.
