11TH OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

A while back I started the Little Right Wing Circle Jerk, which is founded on two principles:

1) Information found on blogs is at least as accurate as information found in the mainstream media

2) It's morally wrong to hijack someone else's blog.

The second one is fairly easy to agree with, but the first one requires a little nerve to assert.

In my recent surfing, however, I've come across a post proving that the blogosphere can get its facts straight even when the MSM gets them wrong. In honor of which, I present:

THE ELEVENTH OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

The Little Right Wing Circle Jerk Award of Merit (or "Jerky") is given to those who defend the honor of blogger credibility vs. the so-called "journalistic integrity" of the mainstream media. I hereby award a Jerky to:

Michele of Letters From New York City for "Much Ado About Nothing!"

In her post, she takes note of the hysteria surrounding the supposed passage of a law that criminalizes "posting annoying Web messages or sending annoying e-mail messages without disclosing your true identity". Well, Michele actually bothered to READ the law in question, and does an excellent job of laying out its true scope - which is basically that it only applies to stalkers, and not to bloggers.

She takes the news media to task as follows:

Not only were the news organizaitons using the incorrect version of the legislation (they used a 2yr old draft), they were quoting wording that is NOT in the final/enacted version.

You've probably seen the "annoying has been outlawed" story elsewhere, now go see Michele for the facts.

So, as long as she promises not to hijack any blogs, Michele is cordially invited to display either the Jerky Award image or the Little Right Wing Circle Jerk logo, or both.

TENTH OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

A while back I started the Little Right Wing Circle Jerk, which is founded on two principles:

1) Information found on blogs is at least as accurate as information found in the mainstream media

2) It's morally wrong to hijack someone else's blog.

THE TENTH OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

The Little Right Wing Circle Jerk Award of Merit (or "Jerky") is given to those who defend the honor of blogger credibility vs. the so-called "journalistic integrity" of the mainstream media. I hereby award a Jerky to:

Mamamontezz of Mamamontezz's Mental Rumpus Room for her post "Semper Fi/A Study in How An Event Is Covered"

In her post, she compares the original DOD/AFIS press release covering recent events in Iraq to the hacked, butchered, and generally lacking-in-facts coverage given to the story by the "journalists" in the MSM. It's not pretty.

Here's a quote from the ending summary:

...isn't it sad that it takes some old chick on dial-up on a busted office chair with nothing but a pig lamp for light to do this, while the journo-types get paid good money to turn out half-assed articles. And don't talk deadlines. I did this in an hour.

So, as long as she promises not to hijack any blogs, Mamamontezz is cordially invited to display either the Jerky Award image or the Little Right Wing Circle Jerk logo, or both.

NINTH OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

2) It's morally wrong to hijack someone else's blog.

THE NINTH OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

The Little Right Wing Circle Jerk Award of Merit (or "Jerky") is given to those who defend the honor of blogger credibility vs. the so-called "journalistic integrity" of the mainstream media. I hereby award a Jerky to:

Pixy Misa of Ambient Irony for his post "Journalists Learn... Nothing, Take Two"

Here's a sample quote:

Leading blogs - at least, the ones that have earned that place, like Instapundit and Powerline - don't need ethics guidelines and prominently posted corrections policies because they HAVE ethics and they MAKE corrections. Because, unlike a certain newspaper of record, their reputations are at stake with everything they write, and their reputations are their lives - as far as blogging goes.

The rest of his piece is a gorgeous fisking of a New York Times article that utterly smashes every sub-sentient assertion those Times troglodytes make. Go enjoy the whole thing.

Meanwhile, as long as he promises not to hijack any blogs, Pixy is cordially invited to display either the Jerky Award image or the Little Right Wing Circle Jerk logo, or both.

2) It's morally wrong to hijack someone else's blog.

THE EIGHTH OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

The Little Right Wing Circle Jerk Award of Merit (or "Jerky") is given to those who defend the honor of blogger credibility vs. the so-called "journalistic integrity" of the mainstream media. I hereby award a Jerky to:

VARepublicMan of Flaming Duck for his post "Predictions on the Future of the MSM"

Here's a sample quote:

It is a fallacy to think that the MSM had a monopoly over the distribution of news. The true distribution channel for news is, and always has been, word of mouth.[...]The MSM was able to place reporters at important events and then only television, radio and print outlets had the capital to create and distribute news reports. But now, Internet access is fairly ubiquitous. We no longer need a single reporter to create a report. We have dozens of people who are willing and able, because of the Internet, to talk about the events in real time.

As long as he promises not to hijack any blogs, VARepublicMan is cordially invited to display either the Jerky Award image or the Little Right Wing Circle Jerk logo, or both.

2) It's morally wrong to hijack someone else's blog.

THE SEVENTH OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

The Little Right Wing Circle Jerk Award of Merit (or "Jerky") is given to those who defend the honor of blogger credibility vs. the so-called "journalistic integrity" of the mainstream media. I hereby award a Jerky to:

Pamela of Atlas Shrugged for her post "PWR; Pamela's Weekend Recap. The Chicken Came First" (found via the New Blog Showcase Carnival #6 at Snooze Button Dreams)

Here's a sample quote:

The American people are searching for truth in a mad, mad, mad world. And there is veracity in the blogosphere. Unlike the MSM (mainstream media) the blogs have tens of thousands of fact checkers, specialists - all in the their area of expertise. Any fallacy, misrepresention or out and out lie will be "outed" by the bloggers. The blogosphere maintains the highest standards. They answer to a higher authority - us. Vetted by all Americans, blogs are forums in which to correct and speak out. No inaccuracy goes unpunished, inhabited by lawyers, doctors, engineers, sanitation engineers, scholars, construction workers - well, you get the idea.

As long as she promises not to hijack any blogs, Pamela is cordially invited to display either the Jerky Award image or the Little Right Wing Circle Jerk logo, or both.

SIXTH OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

A while back I started the Little Right Wing Circle Jerk, which is founded on two principles:

1) Information found on blogs is at least as accurate as information found in the mainstream media

2) It's morally wrong to hijack someone else's blog.

The second one is fairly easy to agree with, but the first one requires a little nerve to assert.

In my recent surfing, however, I've come across a couple posts in praise of the excellent job the blogosphere does of getting its facts straight. In honor of which, I present:

award.gif

THE SIXTH OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

The Little Right Wing Circle Jerk Award of Merit (or "Jerky") is given to those who defend the honor of blogger credibility vs. the so-called "journalistic integrity" of the mainstream media. I hereby award Jerkies to:

1) Owen of Boots and Sabers for his post "MSM Jerk-Boy"

Here's a sample quote:

The credibility [of the information posted on blogs] is as strong as any MSM outlet. I have been posting for nearly two years. In that time, I have never knowingly printed anything false. If I unwittingly did, I corrected it in an obvious fashion. This, I suspect, is far more than anyone could say for Mr. Rieckman. Credibility is built upon the experience of the reader. It is not granted by a degree in journalism.

2) Teresa of Technicalities for her post "Me Blog People!". I especially like that, instead of RIPPING this guy a new asshole, she surgically enlarges said orifice with deft strokes of her verbal scalpel.

Here's a sample quote:

I see that on the basis of his perusing a few blogs, he is now ready to lump everyone into the same category. Are there blogs with poor writing? Absolutely. Are there blogs with poor idea expression? Positively. Does this cover all blogs available? Absolutely, Positively NOT! Mr. Gorman, in a rather more erudite manner, using complete sentences and good grammar, has produced a column that is just as bad in it's own way, as the blogs he is so ready to dismiss. Calling names, calling into question the intelligence level, these are the tools of a person with no real ammunition against something they dislike. The thought being maybe if he says it often enough and loud enough people will start believing that it's true. This is the same mindset used by the MSM to push their own unique view of the world. So far it's not working.

As long as they promise not to hijack any blogs, Owen & Teresa are cordially invited to display either the Jerky Award image or the Little Right Wing Circle Jerk logo, or both.

FIFTH OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

A while back I started the Little Right Wing Circle Jerk, which is founded on two principles:

1) Information found on blogs is at least as accurate as information found in the mainstream media

2) It's morally wrong to hijack someone else's blog.

The second one is fairly easy to agree with, but the first one requires a little nerve to assert.

In my recent surfing, however, I've come across a post in praise of the excellent job the blogosphere does of getting its facts straight. In honor of which, I present:

THE FIFTH OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

The Little Right Wing Circle Jerk Award of Merit (or "Jerky") is given to those who defend the honor of blogger credibility vs. the so-called "journalistic integrity" of the mainstream media. I hereby award a Jerky to:

John Hawkins of Right Wing News for his post "5 Misconceptions About Blogs & The Mainstream Media"

Here's a sample quote:

Bloggers aren't accountable and trustworthy like the mainstream media! You mean bloggers can't compete with the same mainstream media that gave us Jayson Blair, Stephen Glass, Jack Kelley, & the memogate scandal? Pshaw!

There are unreliable bloggers and unreliable members of the media. At least where the bloggers are concerned, you usually have readers pointing out the flaws in the comments section of the post and links to the original source material provided that gives the readers more relevant information to work with.

I'd also note that corrections in the blogosphere tend to be same day or next day at worst, unlike the mainstream media which can takes weeks to correct factual errors. The blogosphere -- like the mainstream media -- may not be perfectly accountable and trustworthy, but I'd take Glenn Reynolds over the New York Times in the accuracy department any time.

As long as he promises not to hijack any blogs, John is cordially invited to display either the Jerky Award image or the Little Right Wing Circle Jerk logo, or both.

FOURTH OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

2) It's morally wrong to hijack someone else's blog.

THE FOURTH OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

The Little Right Wing Circle Jerk Award of Merit (or "Jerky") is given to those who defend the honor of blogger credibility vs. the so-called "journalistic integrity" of the mainstream media. I hereby award Jerkies to the following fine folks:

Greyhawk of The Mudville Gazette (post found via blogdaughter Tammi of Road Warrior Survival). Here's a sample quote:

But those in the media, previously the sole source for reporting on events and their impacts on the troops in a combat zone, should take note: there are other voices everywhere now. Your ignoring (or worse, twisting) of the scenes like this one will not make them vanish down the "memory hole".

In the same post, Greyhawk points out a man who, while deserving of a Jerky, does not yet have a blog, much to the sadness of people everywhere:

Donald Rumsfeld:

And the Internet is helping. More and more people are seeing things that are taking the conventional wisdom and critiquing it and arguing it and debating it. And that's a good thing.

As long as they promise not to hijack any blogs, the above-linked people are cordially invited to display either the Jerky Award image or the Little Right Wing Circle Jerk logo, or both.

2) It's morally wrong to hijack someone else's blog.

THE THIRD OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

The Little Right Wing Circle Jerk Award of Merit (or "Jerky") is given to those who defend the honor of blogger credibility vs. the so-called "journalistic integrity " of the mainstream media. I hereby award Jerkies to the following fine folks:

Teresa of Technicalities:

Things will never be perfect, but blogs and the internet, give us a chance to find out what is happening and a chance to effect change. We can fight voter fraud if we know about it. We can wash off the mud with reason. We can help local campaign offices if we know they've been vandalized. We can organize and participate in protests or support groups because we know they are happening.

Laurence of This Blog Is Full Of Crap:

Maybe the benefit of blogging is that people have the opportunity to read all the content on a subject, evaluate the arguments and validity of source material, form an opinion on the reliability of the speaker, and then judge for themselves?

As long as they promise not to hijack any blogs, the above-linked people are cordially invited to display either the Jerky Award image or the Little Right Wing Circle Jerk logo, or both.

2) It's morally wrong to hijack someone else's blog.

The second one is fairly easy to agree with, but the first one requires a little nerve to assert.

THE SECOND OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

The Little Right Wing Circle Jerk Award of Merit (or "Jerky") is given to those who defend the honor of blogger credibility vs. the so-called "journalistic integrity " of the mainstream media. I hereby award Jerkies to the following fine folks:

Gerard of American Digest:

Yes, it will be argued, 'the blogging phenomenon is still tiny when compared to the (remarkably shrinking) audience of Dan Rather's Nightly newscast.' That might be a persuasive argument if bloggers were hermits living down in a cypress swamp with only marsh lights and glowing monitors illuminating their fitful existence. Alas for old media, these new media life forms actually have access to the largest and more important media distribution channel on the planet, bigger even then, gasp, The Internet -- Word of Mouth. And in electoral politics, word of mouth bats last and closes the sale.

A blog is not just a page, but a human being -- sometimes several human beings. Each blogger has friends, family, and associates and they read the page, no matter how small. And all those friends, family and associates have other friends, family and associates that they talk to, that they hang out with, that they dine and sleep with. And all those people have backfences of the mind or of the yard and that's how the news gets around. That's how tens of thousands of opinions and facts get spread out to millions upon millions of others -- fast and as sure as the law of gravity. A small page here and a small page there and pretty soon you're talking about a medium with a pretty big mouth.

Paul of Wizbang:

How many people are in your newsroom Mr. Wasserman? 50, 100, 200???

Today in the blogosphere, a single post garnered well in excess of 300 links. Each person reviewing what others have claimed and offering what they knew. Can you say 300 people in your newsroom looked at your column today Mr. Wasserman? ...30? ...3?

Glenn of Instapundit:

When you're a blogger, you present ideas and arguments, and see how they do. You have a reputation, and it matters, but the reputation is for playing it straight with the facts you present, not necessarily the conclusions you reach. And a big part of the reputation's component involves being willing to admit you're wrong when you present wrong facts, and to make a quick and prominent correction.

As long as they promise not to hijack any blogs, the above-linked people are cordially invited to display either the Jerky Award image or the Little Right Wing Circle Jerk logo, or both.

JERKIES!

In my recent surfing, however, I've come across several posts in praise of the excellent job the blogosphere does of getting its facts straight. To honor these intrepid souls, I present:

award.gif

THE FIRST OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

The Little Right Wing Circle Jerk Award of Merit (or "Jerky") is given to those who defend the honor of blogger credibility vs. the so-called "journalistic integrity " of the mainstream media. I hereby award Jerkies to the following fine folks:

James Lileks of The Bleat:

"Christmas in Cambodia was finally mentioned Monday on Fox news, which may be the tipping point. The other channels are now free to discuss the issue by discussing the controversy, which is the standard excuse. For Fox to break a story – well, it’s like Paris Hilton hiking up her skirt to show a new tattoo that depicts details of a planned Al Qaeda attack. Consider the source! But the tattoo seems unusually detailed, and coincides with reports from other sources. Perhaps that’s the food chain of the future: Drudge > blogs > Fox > CNN > New York Times > Maureen Dowd. A relay race with a lit stick of dynamite as the baton. Can she bury it in a pail of sand in time? Stay tuned!"

Matty O'Blackfive, who quotes the Chicago Sun-Times thusly:

"Even if the major media decided to bury this story, they would probably not succeed -- and they know as much. The "blogosphere" -- that voluntary society of unpaid free-lance journalists -- is following the story avidly, correcting errors, producing original documents, sifting through different accounts. Some bloggers are for Kerry, some against, but all are together advancing the story by winnowing truth from falsehood. Unless the bloggers conclusively acquit Kerry before the story migrates outwards, the mainstream media will eventually be forced to devote serious resources to it."

Tammi of Road Warrior Survival:

"When Smash posts something, I pay attention. Same with Blackfive. Why? For several reasons, but high on the list is the fact that they talk about what they KNOW. They have established credability with me. Time and time again, they've said it and they've been right. Not only that, but if something is mistaken, or misspoken - THEY ISSUE A CORRECTION. Right there, in front of everyone. They say it. That matters. A lot."

Lynn of Reflections in d minor:

"It has always annoyed and often amused me that many people feel that what they read in books is necessarily more trustworthy than anything found on the Internet. There is, without a doubt, a lot of garbage on the Internet but there's also a lot of garbage in books, newspapers and on TV. I think the difference is that with traditional sources we always felt that there was someone looking out for us, sorting through the garbage and providing us with "reliable information." Never mind that those trusted gatekeepers might be mis-informed, biased and self-serving."

Jeremy of iRi:

if you want to compare bloggers to journalism fairly, you must measure the best of the bloggers against the best of formal journalism.

Because if you insist on defining blogging as "millions of people doodling in their journals, with rare people who sometimes make an interesting point", then I'm going to define journalism as "hundreds of thousands of parochial local rags designed to get as many local names as possible in print, and the rare international journalist that has something moderately interesting to say".[...]If you want to compare Pulitzer Prize journalism to some schmoe on LiveJournal, don't bitch when I choose a cliche-ridden sports story as indicative of Jouralism as a whole.

Bear of The Truth Laid Bear:

"That kind of carelessness might have cut it a few years ago, when somnolent Big Media hacks were satisfied to define reporting as getting quotes from both party's spokesmen. But times have changed, friends: there isn't just one new sheriff in town, there's thousands of us. We will fact-check your ass, and we will do it thoroughly and properly, with links and primary sources that let our readers decide where the truth lies. So straighten up and fly right, because we are watching --- and we do this crap for fun."

As long as they promise not to hijack any blogs, the above-linked people are cordially invited to display either the Jerky Award image or the Little Right Wing Circle Jerk logo, or both.

LITTLE RIGHT WING CIRCLE JERK

lrwcj.jpg

Thanks to Pam of Pamibe, the LRWCJ has a logo. Membership requirements are as follows:

Agree with the following 2 statements (which are explained more fully at the links - please take special note of Mac Diva's blather in the comments):

1) Information found on blogs is at least as accurate as information found in the mainstream media

2) It's morally wrong to hijack someone else's blog.

Then put the logo in your sidebar and link this post.

Welcome to the childish, group grunting subsidiary of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy.

You may now begin vigorously pumping your fist towards a climax of truth.

UPDATE (7-8-04) Smaller (150px) logos available here. Choice of background color by request.
