HARD TO NARROW THIS ONE DOWN, BUT...

Bloggreatgranddaughter Tink of Tink's Tribulations muses over the following question:

What advice would you give to your younger self?

"Do your homework."

If I'd followed that bit of wisdom, I could have easily graduated near the top of my high school class.

If I'd also handed myself a copy of "The Lively Art of Writing", (preferably somewhere in the 4th grade) I would've been AT the top. As it was, I didn't run across it until my Senior year. It was the book from which I first learned how to write essays, and it completely changed my life. Until then, I'd had now idea that there were actually learnable techniques to writing, and the bastards in charge of my public education never told me any different.

I'm still bitter about that.

1 What is up with the freaky font on your page? It's damn near unreadable.

2 Font looks fine here... I've touched on this subject on my blog. I wouldn't give any advice - I'm here, now, because of how I did things. Who's to say things would have worked out better? I'd probably laugh hard at my younger self though. Cocksure, arrogant little ****** he was for sure!

3 Could be a browser issue on your end (or the code on my end) but it looks ok in FF 2.0.6 and IE 5.5

4 Font looks fine here too. Will have to take a look for that book. Would be interesting reading, I am sure. Since I was in school many years before you and writing was essential in those days, I probably had a better grasp of it by the time I graduated.

5 What Alex said! I wouldn't be doing what I am doing now, which I love, if I didn't do the stupid things I did back then.

6 "Pretend to be dad and invest in Microsoft"

7 Actually, I invested in Microsoft back in 1995. What I'd tell myself is "sell when it hits 110", instead of riding out that ridiculous anti-trust settlement crap, which cut the value of the stock in half, and from which it never really recovered.
