So I'm driving around last night, and I've got Bach's Brandenburg Concertos playing, and it occurred to me - yet again - that a LOT of classical music has the energy, style, and intracacy to be perfectly suited to interpretation through modern instruments.
Yet I've rarely heard it done.
If anyone's familar with other modern arrangements of classical music, let me know.

How about "Flight of the Bumblebee" done by Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme?

That counts. Any idea where I can find it? Preferrably on the web somewhere?

Had to break out the CD to find out. It's from their second album "Pornograffitti". He uses it as an intro (about 1:30 long) to the song "He-Man Woman Hater" (can't believe the song is 16 years old.).
Maybe itunes? I'm not sure where to get it, I still buy CD's and rip them myself.

Steve Vai's "Eugene's Trick Bag" from Crossroads (Ralph Macchio's, not Britney Spears'). It's a reprse of "Turkish March by Kanengiser. Pretty Sweet, though. http://youtube.com/watch?v=6GiEdolOdE4&search=steve%20vai%20crossroads

Try the Jacques Loussier Trio (jazz) versions of Bach and Haydn and Handel. Truly gorgeous stuff. Some of the most fantastic music ever recorded. He has been doing this for 40 years.

Classical with Electric Guitars?
Yngwie Malmsteem
For Classical with modern instruments and a Arabic feel? Go Cheb Khaled. (He's under numerous death threats from Islamic fundamentalist so I figure he's safe heh)
For straight vocals go with the Benedictine Monks of San Bernidino

There was a speed metal band in the eighties called Ludichrist, I saw them perform a mighty tight version of flight of the bumblebee that was beautiful to behold.

I don't know if it's considered "classical" music but Jimmy Hendrix's rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner" on electric guiter.
Brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear that version.

QW - I agree with you on Jimi's SSB. Although I've frequently chastised singers for trying to make the anthem about THEM insted of about the song, I think Jimi adds a lot of power to the song that's perfectly consistent with its theme.
