Generally, unless there is a big difference ($0.10-$0.15 a gallon) you will spend more money driving out of your way than just filling up at the closest station.
But that's just the math talking...

True, I would never drive to the next town just to fill up (my time has value, too), but there may be a gas station that's only barely out of the way that I never notice.
