JUST A REMINDER

Linus of Pepper of the Earth lives in New York City, and a couple weeks ago, reported on a local event that didn't make the evening news, although it was probably of the right caliber to do so:

We wouldnÂ’t have noticed except the building PA buzzed into life to tell us not to panic; theyÂ’re calling this a high-visibility anti-terrorist drill. Our resident wags - OK, yes, that would include me - point out that this is hardly going to stop crackpots from flying planes into skyscrapers, but in watching the maneuvers I realize that the point here is moving a large force into a narrow area quickly and efficiently. In other words, itÂ’s not so much to stop things from happening as to set down practice for cleaning them up.

Reading this was a splash of icy water. A reminder that 9/11 really happened and that the world has changed in a yet another small way I never would have predicted. A quiet sadness washed over me for a moment after reading this, then I sighed, swallowed, and moved on. I was reminded that every moment is precious, and that I'd best get busy living while I can.

I think I'll go kiss my wife now.

1 I think of much of what surrounds me now as pre-9/11 vs. post 9/11. My kids will never really know any different, which I find very sad.

2 My favorite nephew's son was born 3 months prior to 9/11. I can't imagine what it's going to be like trying to explain how things used to be - that headlines used to be about BJ's instead of beheadings. I don't know if words can tell the story.
