WHY COULDN'T THE PROFESSOR FIX THE MINNOW?

Bloggranddaughter Carmen of I'll Do What I Wanna Do...Gosh! asks about the age-old mystery:

If the professor on GilliganÂ’s Island can make a radio out of a coconut, why can't he fix a hole in a boat?

As far as I know, they never address the question on the show, but I'd like to take offer up some plausible reasons.

* No nails.

* Simply can't make waterproof tar/glue/sealant out of the local plants.

* The propellor, shaft, and/or other engine parts were damaged when the boat hit the beach.

* No gas to run the engine.

Did I miss anything?

1 LOL - the most obvious answer being then they couldn't call it Gilligan's Island... ;P

2 If you were stranded with Mary-Ann and Ginger and you looked like the Skipper, would YOU try and fix it?

3 Ogre beat me to it. Two reasons--Ginger & Mary Ann. Especially Mary Ann.

4 Hey, I'm sure you could rig a jib and foresail out of their brassieres. They could have gotten off the island if they wanted to. Not to mention, dangle the now naked femes in front of the men so that they'd row/paddle the minnow back to civilization.

5 Feh. I *hate* being late. All the good answers were taken!

6 Uhhhhh....how about "because the script didn't call for it"?

7 In Episode 8 ("Goodbye Island") Gilligan discovers a tree sap that he uses as a pancake syrup. Then the Professor discovers it can be a glue, and they use it to patch the boat. Turns out the glue is only temporary, and the boat falls apart. That's why there was not Minnow after that episode. Gosh! Don't y'all have TBS?

8 Basil - Actually, I vaguely remembered the syrup/glue thing, but I didn't remember the Minnow falling apart. Sounds familiar now that you mention it, though.

9 Close guys, but no! I think it was crystal clear to anyone with eyes that the professor carried a torch for Gilligan. Unfortunately in that benighted age such things were not accepted by society at large. So the only option was to stay on the island until Gilligan returned his unrequited love. Duh!
