11TH OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

A while back I started the Little Right Wing Circle Jerk, which is founded on two principles:

1) Information found on blogs is at least as accurate as information found in the mainstream media

2) It's morally wrong to hijack someone else's blog.

The second one is fairly easy to agree with, but the first one requires a little nerve to assert.

In my recent surfing, however, I've come across a post proving that the blogosphere can get its facts straight even when the MSM gets them wrong. In honor of which, I present:

THE ELEVENTH OCCASIONAL JERKY AWARDS

The Little Right Wing Circle Jerk Award of Merit (or "Jerky") is given to those who defend the honor of blogger credibility vs. the so-called "journalistic integrity" of the mainstream media. I hereby award a Jerky to:

Michele of Letters From New York City for "Much Ado About Nothing!"

In her post, she takes note of the hysteria surrounding the supposed passage of a law that criminalizes "posting annoying Web messages or sending annoying e-mail messages without disclosing your true identity". Well, Michele actually bothered to READ the law in question, and does an excellent job of laying out its true scope - which is basically that it only applies to stalkers, and not to bloggers.

She takes the news media to task as follows:

Not only were the news organizaitons using the incorrect version of the legislation (they used a 2yr old draft), they were quoting wording that is NOT in the final/enacted version.

You've probably seen the "annoying has been outlawed" story elsewhere, now go see Michele for the facts.

So, as long as she promises not to hijack any blogs, Michele is cordially invited to display either the Jerky Award image or the Little Right Wing Circle Jerk logo, or both.

1 Wow, you sure know how to get a girl all choked up. Thanks for the honor! However, the better post to read is my most recent one called Profile of a Pursuit, which is one of the hundreds of case studies used in forging the law with the wording it has. It's a hair raising tale in which truth is stanger than fiction.
