LIVECHAT DURING THE BLOGCRAWL? THIS COULD BE INTERESTING...
BloodSpite of

I have NO idea what I'm doing with this, but I went here:

Registered (it's free), and set up a public chatroom called "Blogcrawl".
There's a tutorial here, which I won't read because instructions are for sissies.

ADULT SIPPY CUP
Blogdaughter Sally of Whimsy Capricious says
she has trouble keeping enough fluids by her bedside to keep her from getting thirsty at night:
we own hundreds of plastic kid's cups. Glittery Barbie, Little Mermaid, Disney Princess monstrosities...tons of them. The trouble with these cups is that they don't hold much liquid.
May I recommend one of these?
8 inches high, 5 inches diameter, holds about 64 oz of liquid, and has a spill-resistant closable top.
Wait... Sally's English... I need to convert to metric... where's that calculator?...
[spends several minutes longer than necessary playing with calculator]
Oh! The NUMBERS...
About 20 cm high, about 13 diameter, and holds just under 2 liters.

WONKETTE SAYS JOHN ROBERTS "NOT GAY ENOUGH"
(
A Precision Guided Humor Assignment cross-posted from IMAO)
Even with his penchant for plaid pants and his eagerness to wrestle with sweaty, half-naked young men, Supreme Court Nominee John Roberts faced strong criticism from the left for his lack of overt homosexuality.
"When Roberts was first introduced," said butt-sex-loving possibly-closeted-lesbian leftist blogger Wonkette. "I thought that Bush was trying to break ground with the first Gay-American Supreme Court justice. Why else would he give a girl's SCOTUS seat to a guy?"
"But as I looked deeper into his past, I was disappointed. Sure, he was a man-grabbing drama-princess in high school, but he also played football - although that last may have been an excuse to snag an eyeful of locker-room boy-booty."
"I really got my hopes up," continued Wonkette, "when I read that he'd had a role in the musical 'You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown'. I thought that if he played that *ahem* thumb-sucker Linus - you know, the one who kept rebuffing that pretty blond girl, Sally - that would seal the deal on him being light in the loafers. Unfortunately, he played Peppermint Patty."
"I guess I should give him SOME gay-cred for portraying a lesbian, though."
When questioned directly at a recent press conference, Roberts briefly acknowledged his disappointly mild homosexuality.
"Of course I'm gay," said Roberts. "Who wouldn't be festive & cheerful after being nominated to the Supreme Court? But I'll try to contain myself until after the hearings."

PING CHECK (UPDATE: ANY WORDPRESS GEEKS OUT THERE?)
Stop the ACLU can't receive trackbacks, and Jay asked me if I could figure out why.
If he were using Haloscan, this would be easy.
As it stands, I'm just going to try sending a trackback to a random post & see if he's just crazy in the head.
Then I'll ask for someone with a clue to help.
UPDATE 7-28-05 6:45 PM: Sounds like a template/design issue. Anybody know how to get WordPress to display trackbacks? Please comment.

He uses WordPress and PHP. Expertise in that environment may be needed.
By the way, is it true that he's not accepting trackbacks? Or is it that he's not displaying trackbacks that are accepted? You didn't ask, but you might want to rule out the latter.
Does WordPress show a list of trackbacks on the blog-owner interface? Similar to what you see in MovableType or TypePad? If so, do trackbacks show up there? If so, it might be the IF statement that decisions when and where to display trackback info.
Just my uninvited thoughts on the matter.

It may be a code problem...for all I know it may be accepting them, but it is not displaying them.

Harvey, I use manuel trackbacks because put a trackback link in my WP write post area has never worked. When I try and do that on one of Jay's posts, his page loads instead. I don't get the pass/fail code. I posted a help shout out on the wordpress.org site, but last I checked, no one else had an idea what was happening either there.

There is a LONG thread about this on the wp support forums. I just started with wp, but I write php code, and I've done a bit of delving around in mine. You'll want to open the index.php file (this won't be the one in your top directory, but the one in the directory for the theme you're using. for me, that's /public_html/wp-content/themes/theme/).
This is going to be icky in a comment box, but here goes.
Look for a string of these functions (what order and so forth will depend on the theme, but they're all the same php engine):
the_category()
the_author()
These should be inside a loop that looks something like this:
if (have_posts())
and so forth.
It sounds like you're missing the trackback_url() function. That string of functions above is what prints the links to the comments, category, permalink, etc. at the bottom of the post. To the string somewhere add something like:
Trackbacks:
and that should print the trackbacks link which will show them if you click it.
Sorry, code in a comments window is a pain in the ass. Email me (address above) if you'd like a clearer explanation.
Posted by: bondc at July 28, 2005 09:19 PM (vC9RF)
5
Oops, the php code doesn't print. Email me.

6
oh goodness. i had this same problem, what did i do... the trackback url thing was fine in mine, i tried changing that one 4000 times and it didn't do anything.
ah yes... it was the easiest fix ever, i just remembered!
it was something to do with the domain and the url and blah blah blah. in Options/General... make sure that the wordpress address URL and the blog address are exactly the same... even if the blog is in a subfolder in another domain, whichever url is the one that people go to for viewing your blog, that has to be in both places. you don't need to have the subdirectory info in there.

BAD EXAMPLE & FRIZZEN SPARKS FAMILY BLOGCRAWL 2005 (UPDATED 7-29-05)
Blogson Contagion of Miasmatic Review
announces that
from 7pm Saturday, July 30th to 7am Sunday, July 31st, you should get drunk and comment on any (or every) blog on the Bad Example and/or Frizzen Family blogrolls. Here are the rules:
A) You have to be 21 years old to participate. I donÂ’t want some minorÂ’s parents coming back and saying I told them to get pissed drunk and go on the internet. If you are under 21, you may still participate, as a designated blogger.
2) Drink as much as you comfortably feel you should. This is for fun, I donÂ’t want to have blog fodder stories involving charcoal slurries and ER visits. Be responsible, especially if you have to drive. IÂ’m saying right now that if you do something stupid and hurt yourself I will make fun of you. I am neither legally, morally nor ethically responsible for anything you do either in the real world or on the internet. You are all adults and responsible for your own actions.
D) Please attempt to limit the Blog Crawl comments to the time frame listed. Just so, itÂ’s easier to track. Not that IÂ’m going to link to every single post that has a comment on it, I just donÂ’t want to search for them Sunday to see what everyone said. Oh, and a drunken post on your own blog is perfectly acceptable and I will link to those.
4) Try to leave a comment on every blog in the Bad Example and Frizzen Sparks family. You may use my side bar as a reference if you donÂ’t know who they are. Do not feel limited to these blogs only, go ahead and hit any other blog you would like as well. Oh, and a drunken post on your own blog is perfectly acceptable and I will link to those.
(Yeah, I know. But he always numbers things that way)
Anyway, dingus forgot two things.
First, an event like this needs a logo. Pam of Pamibe (see her if you ever need a logo) whipped one up for me. Here's the 150px wide version below. If you click it, you get the 386px wide version, which you can shrink to fit if you need a different size.
Second, Graumagus of Frizzen Sparks never made a Frizzen Family Blogroll for his kids because he's a crappy blogdad. However, since we've had blogkids together (don't ask, and try not to picture it), I figured I could throw something together at Blogrolling.com:
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript" src="http://rpc.blogrolling.com/display.php?r=f08d8a4aa90fa6bc7a26e6d29c6850fb"></script>
Which you can put in your sidebar and you'll get a pretty, alphabetized list like what I got on my right sidebar.
And someone needs to tell me if Refractional Darkness is actually Frizzen (like Contagion says), or just a Friend of Frizzen, since Grau doesn't list him in the family.
UPDATE: As Pam said "smaller... flatter... transparent" (200px wide)
Well, smaller than the 386px version :-)
UPDATE: 7-29-05: The Frizzen Family code is too long to display properly in this post - the last bit gets cut off. It should contain all of the following, except put it all on one line in your template:
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript" src="http://rpc.blogrolling.com/display.php?
r=f08d8a4aa90fa6bc7a26e6d29c6850fb"></script>
UPDATE: 7-30-05: Designated Drivers can get their logo here.
UPDATE: 7-30-05: The Bad Example Family blogrolling code. Also too long to display properly in this post - the last bit gets cut off. It should contain all of the following, except put it all on one line in your template:
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript" src="http://rpc.blogrolling.com/display.php?

Contagion is correct, S., is Grau's blog father.
What about us designated drivers? Do we count???
Posted by: Bou at July 28, 2005 06:54 PM (5JHEt)
3
Actually... I don't consider him so.
He's one of my best friends, but in my opinion a "Blog Father" is someone who either:
A) Inspired someone to start a blog or
B) Badgered them until they started a blog
(Neither of which S. did).
That's why S. has an honored spot in my "Brothers (and Sisters) in all but blood" category (all personal friends from way before I had a blog who I wouldn't hesitate to donate a kidney to if they needed one) but not listed as "Blogfather"
If anyone inspired me to start a blog it was probably
Emperor Misha,
Kim du Toit, and
Rachel Lucas (who used to rock so much that she's still getting more hits per day than I am even though her blog sucks now and she hasn't posted in months). Reading these guys rant is what really drove me to start my own seedy corner of cyberspace.

I think S. considers himself my blogdad too, hope his feelings aren't hurt and stuff, but in brutal honesty the fact that he had a blog before I did wasn't a factor in me starting one, just as my buddy Daniel (of Tiny Place) wasn't (he's had a blog forever too)

Who's
Howard Kurtz?
And why did he omit the link on the words "enough damage" when he quoted my post?
[Hat tip to William Teach of Pirate's Cove for pointing out that someone at the WaPo enjoys dirty-minded smart-assery]

Ya know, I tried to read the column, but he started straying all over the place, I couldn't follow his point, and just gave up because I was getting bored.
DID he have a point?

I'M GOOD WITH IT
Ogre of Ogre's Politics & Views
puts forth the following lament:
This editorial in the Sun News of Myrtle Beach has it right. The editorial talks about a "tax break" that's been proposed in North Carolina. This "break" would allow home builders to be exempt from property taxes for up to 5 years for homes they build that are not occupied immediately.
Of course, if this happens, then everyone else will have to pay more taxes to make up for the builder not paying taxes.
Me?
Personally, I'm happy for ANYONE who gets out of paying any tax for any reason.
It'd be better if it were me, but... *shrug*
And technically, the tax break doesn't CAUSE the higher taxes on everyone else. That's a separate decision and deserves to be cursed on its own.

BOOKS FOR SOLDIERS
ArmyWifeToddlerMom
has the right idea.
As a Navy veteran, I can honestly say that - with the possible exception of shore leave and working girls - a good book does the most to make a soldier's day go better.
When you're not busy working your ass off or fighting for your life, the boredom is appalling.
