Does the time I woke Mr Sally up at 3am shouting " The green lawnmowers are on the roof! Deploy all missiles!" count?

Before we dismiss alternative energy sources as altogether impractical and not worth considering, allow me to point out that wind power is a significant source of energy in southwest Minnesota, where the flat prairie landscape is ideal for it. Travel down highway 23 toward Sioux Falls and count turbines if you don't believe me. It's not a universal solution by any means, but wind provides a good source of cheap electricity in our area. As for the storage problem, it is technologically possible to store excess energy as hydrogen, which can then be transferred back into electricity when the wind isn't blowing. There are efficiency problems, but if the cost of petroleum continues to rise, this could well provide a feasible, economical solution at some point. To conclude a priori that wind power can never work is dogmatic and narrow minded. Just my 2 cents...

True - small, local applications are workable, but Steven's point, if you read his entire post, is that they don't scale up the several orders of magnitude that they would need to in order to make a significant dent (at least 1% of national usage) to be a potential petroleum replacement. I also like his point on how multiple conversions of the energy's form during the production & transmission processes inject gross inefficiencies (and costs) into the alternafuel process.
Wind farms are great for the tiny, dispersed needs of rural Minnesota, but the Twin Cities use more than that just to power all the light bulbs and air conditioners in the 3M home office. Are you going to plant 1,000,000 acres of those bird-blenders on the outskirts of St. Paul?
... Wow. I just noticed these comments are under the wrong post. Oops. Go here to see what Corey & I are blathering about:

I'm hoping Hershey's develops a bold and spicy chocolate sauce - because it would taste even better licking it off of you.
